Virgin mary house

Virgin Mary House: According to tradition, the Mother of Jesus was brought here by st John the apostle and spent the final years of her life in the tiny house. It was discovered, in 1891, in the wake of the visions of Anna Katharina Emmerick, a German mystic of the XIX century who was dear to John Paul II. Since then, it has become a place of pilgrimage for nearly one million people per year. Christians come but so do Muslims, considering that the Mother of Jesus is the most frequently mentioned woman in the Koran.

When you visit Meryemana you will notice thousands of rag ribbons tied to the trees which is a Turkish muslim custom as a holy offering or simply for ‘good luck’. Every Sunday an open-air mass is celebrated at the site. Here you will have the chance to drink from the three fountains of Health, Wealth and Fertility. You will also notice many Turkish people visiting Meryemana as muslims regard Jesus and Mary as saints.

Paul VI was the first pope to visit this place in the 1960's. Later, in the 1980's, during his visit, Pope John-Paul II declared the Shrine ofVirgin Maryas a pilgrimage place for Christians.
